JOHN AND THE PARTICIPANTS IN BIRNIN KEBBI
A powerful music seminar successfully conducted with the praise and worship ministry of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of Nigeria, Saint Dominic Catholic Parish in Brinin Kebbi - kebbi state Nigeria.
A known genius, music teacher, composer, producer, singer, music writer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist, John Ndidika Ewelukwa Udegbunam was invited for the music program.
On arrival on 15th March, 2012, through road transport of 19hours 30 minutes journey, the co-coordinator of the praise and worship ministry of the parish Bro. Gabriel Omale with his team of leaders rushed to the motor park, welcome and led him to the parish.
Rev. Fr. ASP Paul Ogbo came in to the parish after John’s few minutes’ arrival and welcome him too.
The next was to see the parish priest very Rev. Fr. Richard Shua’ibu whom Bro. John Udegbunam described as a man with large heart, spirit of understanding, intelligence, humility and sense of humor, accorded him a warm welcome, “The Rev father is good” he concluded.
The lectures started in the evening with Ethics for Gospel musicians, followed by vocal lessons, sight singing, growing in music ability, instrument maintenance and interactive session the net day.
Participants at the seminar were very happy that the seminar was a huge success and that they have learnt so much. Also that what they have learnt through the brother, the theory, practical and drills will never be forgotten.
All the participants were very zealous, always on time to learn, attentive, disciplined and all their questions were answered by the music coach Bro. John Ndidika Ewelukwa Udegbunam.

The music coach brought many resource materials such as lectures on papers, pamphlets, CDs, VCDs and so on for the participants.
John N Ewelukwa Udegbunam the music Coach was very happy with the warm reception given to him by the parish priest, the leader of the praise and worship ministry bro Gabriel Omale and his Executive, the leadership of the prayer group of the parish, the entire participants and the parishioners.
Bro John sang with the Praise and Worship Ministry at the 6am mass on Sunday 18th March 2012, and wished all God’s abundant blessings before he left to his base, South East Nigeria.

ONITSHA PROVINCE
The Onitsha Provincial Conference of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of Nigeria has been fixed for 3rd -6th November 2011, at Ngwo –Enugu , Enugu State.
John Ewelukwa Udegbunam has been asked to organize and train one thousand (1000) member’s mass choir that will sing at the conference.
It is a free training and is expected to last for eight (8) months.
NATIONAL MUSIC WORKSHOP
The National Praise and Worship Ministry of the Catholic Charismatic of Nigeria has pinned down June 2011, as the period for its National Music Workshop.
This was made known by its National Co-ordinator Bro. Emeka Uche.

John Ndidika Ewelukwa Udegbunam has been a professional musician over 30 years. He plays Keyboard, Guitar, a sound Engineer, Author of many music books, a Singer, Producer and an arranger.
He is into other profession, example Video Shooting, Editing, Directing and other areas. He has sacrificed his time and money to conduct many free music seminars in almost all the major cities in Nigeria and some remote areas for over 30 years.
He has also done so outside Nigeria, he has a serious passion to teach the poor, the rich, old and young music and also to instill in them discipline. He strongly believes that musicians should be disciplined.
He has sponsored albums to help physically challenged persons and the poor. Thousands of Choir members / Musicians have benefited from his music consultancy service which he gives freely over years. Many small and big music groups are making it today because of his continuous guidance. Good numbers of musicians through his advice have established studios, because he is a specialist in that area, also a computer engineer.
He has formed and trained mass choir for churches and organizations freely, many a time involving his personal fund because of his passion for music, believing that God is his strength and source of knowledge. He is known to be very hard in the fight for human right and that of musicians.
In 2010 from July –November he spear headed the arrest of 98 Pirates in 7 states in Nigeria through an association called Music Label Owners and Recording Industries Association of Nigeria (MORAN) which he is the President. Currently, he is a director on the board of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON). A Collecting Society, Fighting for the rights of Musicians in Nigeria.
Bro. John or Honorable / Master as he is fondly called by those very close to him has done much to the Music Industry. He has spent a lot of time and personal fund over 30 years for the good of others and still enthusiastic to continue.

GOSPEL MUSIC: This is the word of God in words of men, transformed into melody or harmony, accompanied with musical instrument, or performed without musical instrument, which can be described as “acappela” i.e. Voice alone.
PURPOSE: Gospel Music which is based on scriptural teachings and morals is meant to propagate the gospel, for the purpose of wining souls for God. Another strong reason is in praise and worship of the Almighty God. There are different kinds of gospel music for different situations. These include; Songs of Thanksgiving, Adoration, Petition, Sorrow, Encouragement, Deliverance, Exorcism. Etc. these’s songs must be scriptural and morally sound. I am not yet concerned here about the style of music (beat) which is also important.
GOSPEL MUSICIAN: This is a person who plays gospel music alone as a professional or an amateur. He or she is purely known and acclaimed as a gospel musician. The gospel musician is strongly looked upon as a born again or as a person who lives truly a Christian life, devoid of immoral life, and an upright person. To be frank, that is what it should be. Gospel musicians always
perform at worship places, seminars, revivals, crusades, conferences and stand out to lead people to God through songs, and all eyes are always on them.
QUALIFICATION: A person is qualified to be a gospel musician if he or she has gone through rudimental aspects and other important tutorials. This is just the human standard, but God has his own standard as inscribed in the scripture: (Sirach 15:9-10) A hymn of praise is not fitting on the lips of a sinner, for it has not been sent from the Lord, for a hymn of praise should be uttered in wisdom, and the Lord will prosper it.
For a person to become a gospel musician both the human and God’s standards are imperative; God’s standard is highly important for anyone that makes use of or sings gospel music, whether a professional or not.
MID ‘70’s EXPERIENCE: No one can narrate the history of gospel music in Nigeria well without mentioning the mid-1970. This period marked a very strong revival in many churches (Pentecostals and none Pentecostals). For the South East and South-South, this brought about the conversion of many professional, national and international circular musicians into accepting Christ as their Saviour-eg. people like Jenny Wary, G.T. Onwuka, Goddy Oku, etc. and also brought about the emergence of new gospel musicians or groups namely, the Charism Band, Renewal Singers, Voice of the Cross, Voice of Salvation, the Saints, Mike Okeke, John Ewelukwa Udegbunam, Patty Obassy, Oddy Olisaebuo, etc.
The gospel music of those days was strongly scriptural and morally based. Almost ninety five percent of the gospel musicians of those days were strongly focused. Their main focus was to preach the gospel and live a chaste life example was the kind of music they played and the words therein. Majority of them were highly committed.
THE TREND TODAY: The Bible says you are in the world but not of the world. Let your light shine go and make the world my disciples. The trend in gospel music world today is a sorry situation, disheartening, disappointing and discouraging. Though we still have very few who have decided not to follow the world. They kept their focus and are living a chaste life, always careful of what they sing, say and do. But many gospel musicians of our day have lost the focus for starting this peculiar genre of music that is always easy to learn, sing and to use for worship in this country. Many are very much concerned with making money. That is the reason they have been swallowed by the devil and the world because of their insatiable quest for money. Today in many occasions, it has been proven to be very difficult to differentiate between circular musicians about gospel musicians because of the kind of things they do and the kind of music they play. Many gospel musicians play circular music at occasions, such as wedding, burial, naming ceremony, bachelor’s eve, etc. My interview with some of them revealed that by playing such music, they can make more money. How are the mighty fallen!
The worst is that they sing peoples’ praise calling names that are not compatible with the Christian doctrine, for those who have been called to spray money on them.
Another disheartening issue is that these groups or individuals usually introduce themselves as gospel band or have inscription which portrays them as gospel musician.
What do you have to say even when a Christian brother or sister who is the host of the occasion keeps mute as the devil is being exalted in a ceremony where he or she is in charge? God have mercy! I watch with tears and a broken heart as many brethren dance the devil’s tune (music) in such occasions in support of the band, and even the host appreciates by spraying money. What a sacrilege in our Christendom today!
The grip of the devil upon many of our gospel musicians today is unquantifiable. After praising the devil for a while you see the same devil’s agent singing in the church or gospel gathering as a God’s messenger, and nobody will dare to stop him or her. Where are the Isaiahs, Ezekiels, Elijahs and John the Baptists of today?
Because of the circular world’s influence, some of these gospel musicians live very rotten life secretly and openly, such that will not be good to be shown in a video gadget- ie.immoral life, drunkenness, habitual debt accumulation, double standard, pride, unfaithfulness, fetish practices, sex outside marriage, Indian hemp-smoking, breach of contract agreements, disappointments, laxity, etc. That is why some song compositions that come out of them today are nothing to write home about, because they are not spiritually rooted in God.
COPYRIGHT: The laxity and laziness found amongst many gospel musicians today have made them become copy cats they do not work hard to know the fundamentals in gospel musicianship nor do they want to sit down to wait on the Lord’s directives, or compose songs and practice properly. Many are always in a rush to produce, play or sing songs. That is why in our markets and everywhere we see many old songs being repeated by different gospel musicians because they have nothing new to offer but are in hurry to mark quick money. Almost ninety-nine percent of these old songs are being repeated in new recording today. Nobody seeks permission for the copyright of the original composer or even write compliment to the originator. That is the situation I hope you know it is stealing. I hope time will come when many will be sued at the law courts on copyright related issues.
CONCLUSION: I hope, by reading this article, you will take a retreat; have a re-orientation on what to do. Seek for God’s directions. Reject all things that are not compatible with the word of God in your life. Always attend fellowship of believers or prayer meetings. Anywhere, anyplace play the gospel music. OWERRI PROVINCIAL MUSIC SEMINAR OF THE PRAISE AND WORSHIP MINISTRY - CCRN
Hon John Ewelukwa Udegbunam conducting music seminar for all the members of Praise and Worship Ministry of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of Nigeria in Owerri province led by Bro Bidi Amadi.
Owerri province is made up of the following dioceses: Owerri, Aba, Okigwe, Orlu, Umuahia and Ahiara. The venue of the seminar was St John’s parish Nchoko, Imo state. It was a very successful seminar and throughout the night, Ewelukwa Udegbunam J displayed his expertise on music lessons as a professional, he spoke vastly on ethics for gospel musicians and a bit of vocal lessons. All the participants were highly educated on the subject and highly excited. The provincial co-ordination praise and worship ministry Bro Bidi Amadi in excitement spoke that the crowd seen at the seminar was unprecedented- participants attended from dioceses in a large number. There were other two speakers that delivered lectures at the event. The event ended with a Sunday morning mass.
